Frequently asked questions

Is night carp fishing legal in Morbihan, France?

Yes, on designated stretches defined by prefectural decree. Geocarp lists these venues with maps, access details and angler reports.

Do I need a French fishing licence?

Yes. A valid French fishing licence (carte de pêche) is mandatory and can be bought online at cartedepeche.fr. Some venues require an additional night carp option from the local angling club (AAPPMA).

What baits are allowed at night in France?

Vegetable baits and boilies only. Any carp caught at night must be released immediately — keeping or transporting carp at night is prohibited by French law (decree 2004-599).

Where can you night-fish for carp on the Blavet and the Oust?

Both rivers are open all year under the prefectoral order in force, on long stretches. The Blavet fishes from Pontivy (a sector running from Saint-Aignan to Pluméliau-Bieuzy) down to Hennebont, via Pluméliau-Bieuzy and Baud. The Oust opens from Josselin to its confluence with the Vilaine: Josselin, Val-d'Oust, Malestroit, Saint-Martin-sur-Oust, Peillac on the uncanalised Oust, and Saint-Jean-la-Poterie. The Vilaine itself adds Rieux, Le Guervet (Nivillac) and Férel (L'Isle, Kerosten). Each sector is precisely bounded by the order — check the spot page before setting up.

In the Morbihan, the prefectoral order in force opens night carp fishing all year on around thirty sectors, spread across three river valleys and a scatter of lakes. The Blavet crosses the department north to south: from Pontivy (a long sector from Saint-Aignan to Pluméliau-Bieuzy via Neulliac, Cléguérec, Le Sourn and Saint-Thuriau) to Pluméliau-Bieuzy, Baud (Languidic, Quistinic, Saint-Barthélémy, Melrand) and Hennebont (Inzinzac-Lochrist). The Oust, to the east, opens from Josselin (Guégon, Forges de Lanouée, Guillac) to Val-d'Oust, Malestroit, Saint-Martin-sur-Oust (Saint-Congard, Peillac, Les Fougerêts), Peillac on the uncanalised Oust (La Gacilly, Saint-Vincent-sur-Oust) and Saint-Jean-la-Poterie down to Rieux. The Vilaine completes the south-east at Rieux, Le Guervet at Nivillac and Férel (L'Isle, Kerosten); the Saint-Éloi opens at Muzillac. Stillwaters cover the whole territory: in the centre, Lac au Duc at Ploërmel, Réguiny lake, Naizin lake at Evellys, the communal lakes of Ménéac and La Peupleraie at La Trinité-Porhoët; to the west, the great Manéhouarn lake at Plouay, Kerbédic at Saint-Tugdual, Bel Air at Priziac, Le Dordu at Langoëlan, Lannénec between Ploemeur and Guidel; around the gulf, Étang au Duc at Vannes, Tréauray at Pluneret, La Forêt at Brandivy; to the south-east, Pen Mur at Muzillac, Moulin Neuf at Rochefort-en-Terre, Le Rodoir at Nivillac, Kernevy at Saint-Dolay, La Rocquennerie at La Gacilly and Aleth at Saint-Malo-de-Beignon. Sector limits and conditions — baits, release, open banks — are those of the order, carried over spot by spot.
