The river Moselle carries about half, running north from Neuves-Maisons through Toul, Liverdun, Frouard and Dieulouard to Pont-à-Mousson and Pagny, with individual lots up to 3.5 km long: big, canalised, barge-traffic water that fishes like a slow river. The Meurthe adds beats at Baccarat, Saint-Nicolas-de-Port, Rosières-aux-Salines and through the Nancy suburbs, and the smaller Madon six more. Canal specialists are well served: the Canal de la Marne au Rhin is open around Dombasle, Xures, Foug and the Nancy pound, and the Canal des Vosges between Tonnoy and Neuves-Maisons. Four lakes complete the list, including the federation water at Moncel-lès-Lunéville. Nancy is the base — a genuinely beautiful city with a UNESCO square — and it is a straight run from Reims on the A4.
