The Canal du Rhône au Rhin is the backbone — the wide-gauge section from the Niffer lock to the Île Napoléon rail bridge, and two long runs of the southern branch from Gommersdorf through Heidwiller to Mulhouse, with a 50 m exclusion either side of each lock. The Canal de Colmar is open along its right bank from Artzenheim into Colmar. On flowing water there are 6.5 km of the Ill through Colmar, 1.2 km of the Vieux-Rhin and Grand Canal d'Alsace, and 4 km of Vieux-Rhin between Chalampé and Rumersheim-le-Haut, right on the German border. Two lakes complete it: Courtavon in the Sundgau hills and the Grand étang Vauban at Algolsheim, both open in their entirety and both run as catch-and-release. Mulhouse and Colmar are the bases, with Basel-Mulhouse airport, the Alsace wine route and the Black Forest all within reach.
